Our customers have been asking for a Kawandi Quilting workshop for some time and this year we have tied Lorena Uriarte (pronounced Lo- wren-a You-ri-art-e) down to a date. Which is super exciting! You don’t have to wait very long because it is coming up in April! If interest is high, we may announce a Sunday 23rd April class as well. Let us know when you book if you’re interested in two days in row.
Kawandi are traditional quilts of the Siddi people from India, they are typically made from sari scraps patched together from the outside in. In this one day workshop you will learn how to make your own beautiful kawandi with gorgeous patchwork prints, wovens and solids. Stitching is very organic and relaxing, giving the finished quilt lots of texture.
Picking each bit of fabric to complete your quilt can be equally meditative and challenging, like working on a jigsaw puzzle. That’s right, unlike regular quilts, kawandi are pieced and quilted at the same time! Making this technique perfect for a beginner quilter, if you’ve lost your quilting mojo or just need something to stitch on the move without a bunch of tools. It is a miraculous Quilt as you go project. When you finish stitching, it is finished.
Then you may use it as it is as a mini quilt OR turn it into bags, pouches, table runners, cushions and more. Lorena will demonstrate the making of the Emmaline retreat bag and you might like to pick up supplies to make that bag when your Kawandi is finished. Lorena is also teaching a regular monthly class with us this year you might like to come back and learn more from Lorena through the year at her Anything Goes regular class
The class fee includes a kit of all the materials you’ll need on the day so it is super easy for someone with no experience to dip into.
Lorena is an award winning quilter and pattern designer known for her original ideas and clever techniques, she specialises in finding a number of ways to employ one technique and to push it as far as it can go, often employing fabric in clever, unexpected ways. In class, Lorena gives you tools to explore your own creativity. Check out Lorena’s website www.lorenauriarte.com and her instagram @lorena_in_syd
She teaches regularly in Sydney and has been invited to teach, interstate and internationally. Lorena is regularly selected to exhibit at QUILTCON, The Modern Quilt Guild show in the USA.

A finished piece of Kawandi about 1m square.

Make your kawandi fun by adding a pompom edge and using it as a scrap or wrap.

Bright colours are glorious in Kawandi but you could use neutrals for a softer effect that highlights the stitched texture.

Look at the amazing texture on the back. Lorena has used a plain black backing that shows up the gorgeous stitching. Use one colour or many!
