Big Bold and Beautiful Quilts

There was not enough room in our calendar in 2022 to make as big a fuss about Chris Jurd’s first book as we would have liked. So instead we are doing it in 2023 with a big display and trunk show alongside a corker of a weekend workshop. A chance to see and hear about all the book quilts up close and a rare two day in a row class with Chris!! Chris’ book was released with Quiltmania and is chock block with Big Bold and Beautiful quilts just as the title suggests all in Chris’ signature style. Bold colours, big blocks,  fast accurate foundation piecing and plenty of graphic black and white is Chris’ signature style. 

We have had Chris teach at the shop a number of times before and everyone has had a great time! We love Chris’ quilts! They are immediately recognisable for their fearless curves, points and colour. Chris is well known as an experienced and organised teacher and is an accredited teacher by QuiltNSW. That sounds all very official but in class Chris is a lot of fun and she will get you working skilfully with new techniques and big fat juicy blocks full of colour before you know it! 

Two days is long enough to make great progress on your chosen project. Or try a block of each quilt on offer. Chris has chosen four quilts that can be taught in class. Phoenix and Morning Star are suitable to do as companions. One day on each quilt. The Strippy Sampler or Road Trip  would be suitable to do a deep dive into over two days. 

Phoenix, the cover quilt for the book is made using an uncommon freezer paper technique which you will thank Chris for after learning it. There is also a tricky tiny bias strip on the corner of each block that makes a secondary pattern of a diamond between each block. 

Morning Stars is an oversized reproduction block traditionally pieced but with a foundation pieced border. The centre star is deceptively large and will almost cover the top of a double bed and so will grow very fast. 

The Strippy Sampler is a fantastic quilt to make to learn a number of Chris’ techniques. From crazy pieced fabric wedges, improv rectangles, foundation pieced stars, stitch and flip irregular triangles, a foundation wheel with circular seams and the deceptively easily pieced crazy zig zag. 

Road Trip is a great foundation pieced quilt suitable for a two day deep dive. Once you have the technique worked out you can make your ‘road’ twist and turn wherever you’d like it to go. 

We are running this class in the large light filled Anglican church hall across the road from the shop surrounded by as many of Chris’ quilts as she can bring including all but one of the quilts in the recent book. It is a unique opportunity to make work surrounded by the quilts hung on the walls for inspiration and to completely immerse yourself in the Chris Jurd vibe. We tried out this format with Kathy Doughty in November 2022 and it was an unbelievable success. 

We will run a trunk show on the Friday night before the workshop in the display so that Chris can chat in detail about each quilt. VISITING TUTOR REFUND POLICY: Due to the outlays we have for visiting tutors, we do not refund class fees once booked and paid for any reason including; change of mind, change of circumstances or illness. You may organise a replacement delegate in class if you can no longer attend but financial arrangements would need to be organised between the two of you. Please let us knew as soon as you know you can’t attend. We may have a waiting list and might be able to help fill your spot. If you do not attend and do not communicate with us, your payment is forfeit. 

COVID 19: At the time of listing, there are not any Covid 19 Protocols aside from having to isolate for 5 days from returning a positive RAT.  If you are unable to attend class at short notice because of covid 19, the above visiting tutor refund policy still applies. There are no refunds for non attendance. Please factor in the risk of contracting Covid 19 when booking.
