We are so excited to have Kathy Doughty coming to teach in Berry!! It has been quite a while since she has been in our part of the world. This is your chance to participate in Kathy’s signature Organic Applique workshop. It is going to be a great opportunity to really see and hear about ways that Kathy chooses and uses fabric. There will be plenty of time and space to test these techniques out in your own composition. Your workshop will take place over two days in a large hall surrounded by as many of Kathy’s quilts as she can fit in a car. Inspiration plus plus plus!!!

We will run a trunk show on the Friday night in the display so that Kathy can chat in detail about each quilt. If you’ve missed out on class tickets you can always book in for the trunk show! Followed by the unique opportunity for study and immersion into Kathy’s imaginative world surrounded by the quilts during the two day Organic Appliqué class! In this class you will hear a lot about composition, colour and Kathy will demonstrate her methods for large scale (and standard size) appliqué using your own designed shapes or her templates and work with you on your own composition. You could of course, choose a project from Kathy’s Organic Applique Book such as the Courthouse Steps ‘Overgrown’ medallions pictured below. Either way-This weekend will be an amazing treat! People love Kathy’s Organic Applique Workshop.  It is geared to provide instruction on using fabric to create interest using simple techniques.  It opens up a door to taking creative freedom and control of design.  Everyone does something different and it is super fun.

ABOUT ORGANIC APPLIQUE -KATHY SAYS: Organic Appliqué is all about making quilts that share your personal voice while taking control of creativity! I am passionate about working with the tried and true structures of traditional quilts but bringing them forward using the colourful, exciting fabrics available today. I have often thought that antique quilts would look very different if the quilting sisters of yesterday had our fabrics!

This workshop focuses on understanding how fabric will perform. We will consider contrast as a way to create line and shape as well as for letting the fabric do the work with a view to creating interest in appliqué! We will build confident pathways to exploring design options and construction methods for making unique projects.

One of the teaching quilts is a Courthouse Steps medallion with surrounding organic appliqué borders. Simple appliqué techniques open the door to decorating the spaces of structure in our quilts and allowing our creative juices to flow!  Use the layout provided or create your own as we go. Colour sets the mood but the personalised appliqué fills the spaces with fun!

You will enjoy this class if you are looking to take control of your creative process. Beginners will be able to achieve exciting results and experienced quilters will be able to take control of their creative ideas with confidence. All intentions are welcome!

Kathy’s book, Organic Appliqué which we carry is recommended but not required for the class. Stock quantities of this book fluctuate depending on the vagaries of international freight but we have 10 copies freshly in stock. If you’d like one get in touch ASAP.

ABOUT KATHY DOUGHTY: Kathy is a self-taught quilter, author, fabric designer and obsessive quilter. Since 2003, Kathy has been the owner of Material Obsession, a patchwork shop in Sydney that is well known for innovation in contemporary fabrics and designs. She is known widely as an innovator in the Australian and International patchwork and quilting world.  Working with customers, teachers and industry leaders has provided a unique skill base and an eclectic style that she loves to share. Kathy’s workshops are focused on building confidence in making decisions and learning to take control of the design process, her talks are all about sharing her love for organic design, the inspiration behind and techniques employed in her quilts. Kathy is an incredibly prolific maker and has travelled extensively quilt shows and trade events internationally to market her books, workshops and fabric designs. Formerly a FreeSpirit fabric designer, Kathy’s recent collection Kindred Sketches (which we have stocked and re-ordered for the class) has been printed by Figo Fabrics to great acclaim!

Growing up in the USA, Kathy says she often looks back on her youth and thinks of the simplicity of green grass yards in Ohio. Cowboys and Indians, hide-and-seek, cards, and coloring filled her days. She liked nothing more than climbing a tree, taking aimless walks in the woods, or going for long bike rides. Sewing was not on her list of favorite activities! She moved several times – from Ohio to New York and back again – before heading off to college in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, where she was surrounded by more wilderness. Upon graduating she left the wild for a different kind of wild – the East Village of New York City during the punk rock era. She worked in advertising, fashion, and marketing for ten years. While living in the city she was often grateful for the foundation of green grass of her youth, she says. Then, she married and moved with her husband to Australia in 1990, where she was able to give her sons the foundation of green grass and a simple, practical life. Her three adult sons are fully Aussie, having grown up playing cricket and rugby.

In 1993 she made her first quilt and instantly fell in love with the “American”-style quilt. It connected her to her childhood and her home so far away and simple pleasures. She spent years making squares until she discovered triangles. Then she found an array of lively shapes and skills that took her into more complex quilting patterns. She enjoys that there is a lot to learn in quilting, and she says she will always want to fine-tune and add skills to the basics that she still loves. She connects with the idea of traditional quilts made modern by the influences of today. She says the many artists with whom she has worked over the years have opened her eyes to the principles of design, color, shape, and line; they include Sue Cody, Marg George, Brigitte Giblin, Wendy Williams, Rosalie Dace, and so many others. Now she wishes to share the added depth she has found as she has grown in her love. -The above is Kathy’s Bio on the C&T Publishing website.
