Loo Taylor runs our monthly Clothes Clinic workshop. In this class, participants are working through a number of basic wardrobe components right from scratch to build up a wardrobe of basics that fit perfectly.
Loo was trained at the London School of Fashion and had an international career as a couturier before heading to Australia and establishing her own eponymous lingerie label. She has an incredible amount of experience and knowledge and enjoys passing as much of that as she can in class.
Loo starts students off making a toile (practice garment) of a top or skirt using her basic pattern blocks. Once the toile is traced off and made up, the customizing fun begins.
Most people are not a standard size!! In this class you will learn how to alter patterns to fit you precisely. You will discover what are the common adjustments you will need to make to patterns for your body type. By making these adjustments on your toile and pattern you will have a well fitting starter garment which you can go on to customise. Change the neck line, hem line, sleeve type, fabric type etc, it all becomes possible once you know how to make the alterations and record them once they’ve happened for next time around.
As you progress through the garments, usually beginning with a skirt or top, you will learn about suitable fabrics for different garments. As needed you’ll learn about zips, hems, seams and many other garment construction tips and techniques, options and be inspired by ways that the patterns could be further customised for greater individuality.
The class is suitable for anyone who has some experience with operating a sewing machine but who is a complete beginner to dressmaking. It is also suitable for those who have more experience, maybe made a few clothes before but want to up skill in garment construction or have assistance to develop properly fitting garments. It is also suitable for anyone who has some clothes they’d like upcycle or re-create by taking a pattern from them. There are many possibilities. You’ll be inspired not just by Loo but by what everyone else is making in class. Places permitting, this class could also be suitable for anyone wanting assistance to make up and fit correctly a commercial pattern.
Usually girls book in to the class for the full year to access an advance payment discount and to continue making multiple garments with Loo’s continued guidance. The class is also available to attend casually at $70 per session if is there is availability. It commonly takes two to three sessions to complete a garment and if that is all you want to achieve, you are still welcome to book in, places permitting.
