This is your chance to join me in the (air conditioned) studio where I’ll teach a mixed class of Scrapplique and Woven Applique. We’ve squeezed in a couple of cheeky dates during summer.
I am teaching both of these techniques in the same class. Coming to one class will give you a taster of one of the techniques and you may see someone else trying the other one. If you come to both classes you will have longer to work on your project, or you may end up trying both techniques. If you wish to come to both you’ll need to book a ticket via the events page for each day’s class. Spaces in our new studio are strictly limited so don’t delay booking. If booking online is too hard give us a call or send an email and I can organise it for you.
Scrapplique has been a popular workshop which I have taught at AQC Melbourne, Misty Mountains Getaway Dorrigo , Wollongong Modern Quilt Guild and the Pelican Piecers near Port Macquarie. It’s a super easy but creatively inspiring technique which has the advantage of using loads of scraps and transforming them magically into useful things. People rave about this class.
Scrapplique is named because it is appliqué with scraps. Super useful for quilters who can end up with more scraps than they know what to do with! We use a piece of a particular type of washaway stabilizer to assemble our collage of scraps. They are then heavily stitched though using fun combinations of threads in straight-line or matchstick machine stitching to hold the mini scraps in place and forming an interesting textured fabric. You will end up with a piece of Scrapplique fabric – perfect for turning into a fun project like a pouch or table runner.
If you book for one class only you will get to the point of finishing your one piece of Scrapplique Fabric. Book into the second class if you’d like help to turn it into a pouch. (For class you’ll need a machine with a walking foot, some fun colourful and /or variegated threads to quilt with, a zip loc bag of small & tiny scraps and a fat quarter or fat 1/8th for a backing. There’s not really a limit to how small your scraps can be.) The class fee of $75 includes the stabiliser needed.
Woven Applique is also an easy technique which can be personalised for your own ‘look’. The class began as a marketplace demo that I ran at the Sydney Quilt Show. When people saw the results they got inspired and I was asked for a longer format and so we are going to try it out here.
We use premade bias strips, although you can use scrap strips of straight grain fabric too. The only hard things are deciding are which piece to put where and how big to make it. For class you’ll need Roxanne’s Glue Baste-It, a sashiko or chenille needle, a selection of embroidery floss or perle 8 threads and fourteen 50cm x 2″ or 21/2″ inch scrappy strips. Your $75 class fee includes a fat quarter for your background. If you don’t want to bring scrappy strips to prep for the project (ironing required) buy a pack of bias from us we have packs ready to go. Packs are: $25 for yarn dyed shot cottons and $22.50 for standard stripes and checks.
