Jo is visiting us for three days. As usual she is a very flexible teacher. You may book for an individual day or days or come for the full three days mini retreat! Classes are $130 per day or $350 for the full three days. Booking via the website does not access the three day special price as you have to add each day individually to your cart. Note: We will refund you $40 if you do book the three days via the website, alternatively email us and we’ll book you in and arrange payment by phone.
Class will be held at Far Meadow, five mins drive from Berry town in our new studio/shop. Lunch and refreshments including catering for dietaries will be included. Note: Places are more limited than in previous years so don’t delay booking.
About Jo
Jo Dixey has developed a cult following in Berry and surrounds for her relaxed but inspiring stitching classes and her clever take on design and appliqué. In a class with Jo Dixey you will learn time tested traditional methods for design and embroidery to make the kind of magic that needles, threads and fabric can create together. Whilst traditionally trained, Jo uses her embroidery skills to make very contemporary work.
Jo runs a relaxed but highly inspirational classroom where everyone is enthusiastically sharing the wonders of what our hands can do. So it’s not surprising that Jo has built up a loyal following in Australia! Come along to a class and you will benefit from the calm, yet creative atmosphere she fosters in her classroom, her fabulous teaching skills, her impeccable knowledge of her subject & her mastery of technique. Incredibly, this will be her seventh teaching trip to Berry from NZ and we would have had her a couple more times by now if it had not been for the very inconvenient covid interruptions and changes in our shop location.
In class, Jo is full of stories about her life as a professional embroiderer both in NZ and the UK where she trained at the Royal School of Needlework in Hampton Court Palace as an apprentice for four years, Jo is a very rare professional embroiderer! As well as writing a fabulous book of contemporary approaches to stitch called Creative Stitch and working as an exhibiting artist, she is regularly commissioned to stitch work for feature films as well as the catwalk, ecclesiastical applications and even historical reproduction. In between all of that, she teaches incredible skill building, embroidery classes to a wide range of audiences. Jo’s book Creative Thread is always in stock!
The 2024 Berry Projects.
It’s Just a Leaf Design Project: Begin Friday, continue Saturday &/or Sunday or come Friday only.
This class begins on Friday with design exercises based on leaves. Students will all do lots of different design exercises on the 1st day then choose one they like to stitch. Jo’s design exercises are very useful of any one wanting to make their own unique projects and are very transferable to other media or textile techniques. Your leaf project could be stitched similarly to Jo’s sample pictured or could even be a pieced quilt block or applique if preferred. If you can only attend on Friday you may choose to spend the day learning the design process only and Jo will get you set up to stitch out your designs at home. Alternatively or you could choose half a day of designing and choose one of those to start stitching in the afternoon. The design techniques will not be covered on Saturday or Sunday. Requirements List HERE:
Have you begin a project with Jo in a previous year that needs some finishing off? Or have you done a class with Jo before and would like some support on any embroidery project you’re working on? You are welcome to sign up and come along to any or all of the days and keep working along with Jo’s back up and motivation. You’ll be continuing to stitch alongside the others starting new projects. You would remember that Jo is very used to teaching large groups, all working at different stages. Three days with Jo is like a mini retreat!!
VISITING TUTOR REFUND POLICY: Due to the outlays we have for visiting tutors, we do not refund class fees once booked and paid for any reason including; change of mind, change of circumstances or illness. Please let us knew as soon as you know you can’t attend. We may have a waiting list and might be able to help fill your spot. You may organise a replacement delegate in class if you can no longer attend but financial arrangements would need to be organised between the two of you. If you do not attend and do not communicate with us, your payment is forfeit.
