We are excited to announce that Brenda Gael-Smith is joining us for a weekend in November to run a special class that she has developed just for us called Berry Abstractions! Well… I’m calling it that cheekily!! Really Brenda’s title is Abstraction in Quilt Piecing.
Brenda is an award winning quilt maker, artist, curator, teacher, mentor, writer & judge who lives on the Central Coast of NSW. She wears many hats in our industry including curating themed exhibitions, running and creating websites for individuals and organisations, providing support and instrumental expertise to the running of many programs at Quilt NSW as well as making varied, interesting and thoughtful work. Brenda is a sought after teacher in the field of modern and contemporary art quilting amongst those who are interested to extend their making to learn about or include aspects of design and/or abstraction. Read more about Brenda Gael Smith and her practice at her website. Or look her up on instagram, here’s the link.
Brenda Gael Smith is driven to abstraction. It is a persistent and insistent force in her creative practice. Much of her work is inspired by the colours and patterns of the natural world. Other times she is compelled to explore the rhythms of geometric shapes for their sheer beauty.
Brenda developed this workshop especially for students looking to stretch their creative muscles and to explore abstraction both in concept and practice. The two-day program includes a brief overview of the history of abstraction in the visual arts and warm-up design exercises using non-sewing tools an the opportunity to convert those exercises from fabric to paper with teacher support. The class is more process oriented than results oriented but you may leave with some exercises and a plan to turning into a larger project.
Learn how to create an improvisationally pieced abstract composition drawn from reality. Working from a personal source of inspiration found in nature or place, students will learn the basics of abstraction through observation, reflection, colour, line, shape and repetition.
Level: medium to advanced. Previous experience in improvisational piecing construction techniques is desirable but not essential.
